Yes, significantly. Sandy-bottom beach breaks (Kuta, Canggu's main beach, Seminyak, Legian, Berawa, Jimbaran) are forgiving enough for soft-tops even at an intermediate level. Reef breaks (the whole Bukit Peninsula, Nusa Dua, Sanur) call for a fiberglass board and reef booties regardless of your level, since the consequences of a reef wipeout are the same whether your board is foam or fiberglass -- only the fiberglass board gives you the control to avoid the reef in the first place.

Do You Need Your Own Gear?
No -- board, leash, wax and (where relevant) reef booties are all included. Bring sunscreen, a rash guard or swimwear, and a towel. If you want a rash guard too, mention it when you book and we can usually include one.
Renting for a Lesson vs Renting to Surf Solo
If you're booking one of our surf lessons, the board is already included in the lesson price -- you don't need to rent separately. Standalone board rental is for surfers who already know how to surf and just need a board for independent sessions between or instead of lessons.

Is a rental board insured if it gets damaged?
