Surf Lessons in Canggu
Canggu is the surf capital of Bali. Home to Batu Bolong, Echo Beach, and Old Man's - three world-class breaks within walking distance of each other. Our instructors live here and know every break, every tide, every seasonal shift.
Why Learn to Surf in Canggu?
Canggu has become Bali's undisputed surf hub for good reason. The 5-kilometre stretch of coastline from Pererenan in the north to Batu Bolong in the south holds a concentration of quality waves that is almost unmatched anywhere in Indonesia. For someone learning to surf, this variety is invaluable - you can progress through different breaks as your skills develop without ever travelling far.
At the beginner level, Batu Bolong Beach provides ideal conditions: a sandy bottom, waves that roll in at a predictable angle, and a gradual shore that lets you stand up and recover with ease. The swell here is shaped by offshore reefs that filter the raw ocean energy down to something forgiving and fun. Most of our students stand up on their very first wave at Batu Bolong.
As you progress to intermediate level, Echo Beach and Pererenan are right there waiting. Echo Beach has a punchy beach break that teaches you to read faster, more powerful waves. Pererenan gets more direct swell and develops stronger bottom turns and timing. Our instructors guide your progression through these spots in the right sequence - no other area in Bali offers this kind of natural curriculum within walking distance.
Canggu Surf Spots
Batu Bolong Beach
Beginner / IntermediateThe heart of Canggu surf. Sandy bottom, consistent chest-high waves that peel nicely left and right. Our primary lesson spot for all beginners. The beach is wide with clear water entries and easy paddle-outs.
Pro tip: Best at low to mid tide. Morning offshore winds clean up the face beautifully.
Old Man's
Beginner / LongboardCanggu's most mellow wave. A slow, rolling right-hander that's perfect for longboarding and first-timers who want extra ride time. Shallow and forgiving with a sandy bottom.
Pro tip: Works at any tide. Ideal for nervous beginners and kids. Less crowd pressure than Batu Bolong.
Echo Beach
Intermediate / AdvancedA powerful beach break with punchy peaks that throw and barrel on bigger swells. One of North Canggu's most exciting waves when it's on. Better suited to surfers who can already turn and duck-dive.
Pro tip: Best on a solid SW swell at low-mid tide. Can be crowded on weekends. Not suitable for beginners.
Berawa Beach
IntermediateA less crowded option just north of Batu Bolong. Similar wave quality with fewer people in the water. Great for intermediate surfers looking to practice turns without the Batu Bolong crowds.
Pro tip: Best in the morning. Works on most swells. Good secondary option when Batu Bolong is packed.
Pererenan Beach
Intermediate / AdvancedThe northernmost break in the Canggu stretch. Gets more consistent swell than the southern breaks and has hollow sections on bigger days. Popular with locals who know the spot.
Pro tip: Best on a solid S or SW swell. Works on most tides. Can have a strong rip on bigger days.
