Skills You Will Develop

The gap between beginner and intermediate is one of the most frustrating in surfing. You can stand up, you can ride in a straight line - but the turns are not working, you are losing speed before the good sections, and the waves that look perfect from the beach feel uncontrollable when you are on them. Our intermediate coaching targets exactly these pain points.

The core of the intermediate lesson is the bottom turn. Everything in surfing flows from a good bottom turn - it generates the speed and angle you need for every subsequent maneuver. Your coach breaks this down physically: where to look, how to shift your weight, when to begin the turn off the wave face. Repeat this correctly a dozen times under guidance and you will have a bottom turn that holds up in different wave types.

Wave reading is the second major focus. Experienced surfers appear to effortlessly position themselves in the best section of every wave they catch. This is a skill that can be taught: reading the swell direction, identifying the fastest-peeling section, and paddling to intercept it before anyone else. We spend time in the lineup between waves explaining what to look for and why, building your pattern recognition for ocean reading.

Intermediate Surf Lesson FAQ

What level is the intermediate surf lesson suitable for?
The intermediate lesson is designed for surfers who can already stand up on a wave and ride in a straight line but want to develop more advanced skills. You should be comfortable paddling out, have reasonable duck-diving technique, and be able to catch unbroken wave faces.
What specific skills will I learn in the intermediate lesson?
The intermediate lesson focuses on: bottom turns, wave reading and selecting the right section, correct foot positioning for generating speed, basic top turns and direction changes, duck diving technique, and lineup positioning to give yourself priority on the best waves.
Which beaches do you use for intermediate surf lessons?
For intermediate lessons, we typically go to Echo Beach or Pererenan in Canggu, Double Six in Seminyak, or the Balangan/Dreamland area near Uluwatu. These breaks have more defined wave faces with longer walls - essential for practising turns.
Is video analysis available for intermediate lessons?
Yes, many of our intermediate coaches can arrange video analysis. Ask about this when booking via WhatsApp. Having footage of your surfing reviewed alongside your coach is one of the most powerful ways to identify and correct technique issues.
Should I transition from a foam board to a fiberglass board for intermediate surfing?
This depends on your current level. Your coach will assess whether you are ready to progress to a fiberglass shortboard or funboard, or whether staying on a slightly smaller foam board would serve you better. Many intermediates benefit from a mid-length or funboard as a stepping stone.
